What a welcome from this school as soon as I got there - and the buzz/excitement of a non-uniform day! .
Well the theme of the day was FUN!! -nothing too difficult in that!
Locating Bill the IT man who was really happy to get the DrumCrazy website up on their computers and take lots of photos - thanks Bill!!
Starting with the oldest children who remembered my previous visit to the school so lots of volunteers to be conductor, starting, stopping the music, making up rhythms, moving out of the circle to play boomwhackers.
Giving them a few minutes in their colour groups to make up rhythms on the subject of fun, then returning to the circle and layering up the different patterns.......... this only works if they are really watching their partner colour group across the circle so that the rhythms fit in with each other; you could almost hear the concentration wheels whirring- these are the quietest of instruments, and the concentration was such no-one had time to breathe - well done - fantastic.
The second group did some drumming and we sung Ah Gee Wah Wah with volunteers helping with the song in the middle of circle then playing along to the song.
I think the group of trainee teachers enjoyed themselves even more than the children - am I right?
The final group of 3 - 5 year olds had a great time - some of them so small they were falling over themselves and losing a grip of drum sticks in their excitement - we stomped, we danced, we sang finishing off with a lion story them adding bits of music and sound - at one point I think there were more lions in the middle of the circle than playing drums..........buzz buzz!!!!
One of the teachers shared with me her anxiety before the session that it would be too noisy to bear, but she was so inspired she was going to take some of the ideas back to the classroom.
See you next time folks!!!!!
Please add your comments, ideas, anything thats what this is here for!!!!!
Ask Bill to show you how or Matthew to give you the password!!
