A cold, windy, rainy morning didnt deter the children at this school.
It is a  small school so we used their village hall for the morning.
The first group of around 40 excited  4 - 7 year olds  started making lots of noise on the drums.  Gradually with the help of different children jumping in the middle of the circle  (To conduct!) they started to all play the beat together, we made up a couple of rhythms from their breakfasts e.g. 'cheerios- with-milk' and 'toast and marmite' and soon everyone was playing together.
A session on the boomwhackers - coloured tubes - see the description of these in the musical instrument section - allowed for some movement and singing of a simple African call and response song working in different colour groups.
The older group followed a similar format except that they made up some rhythms.
The last half hour of the morning allowed both groups to come together, the younger children conducting the older group to drum, and then swapping over so that the younger group could teach the older ones the song they had learnt.
I invited them to e-mail us some of their photos so that the children could see themselves on our blog. The music teacher said when she invited us back next time would invite the parents to come and join in.
